Laura,

Plant the tulips in late December. Purchase them in early to mid fall and store them in the crisper area of the refrigerator until planting time. Don't store them with apples as the apples give off ethylene gas which can damage the tulip bulbs. They don't tend to repeat in the south and most gardeners have found it not worth it to try and dig them up because the bulb are usually not able to replenish their reserves and become strong enough to bloom again due to our hot climate.
