| i would like to seperate my peonies, the bush is very large,and only white blooms.iwould like to spread them out and add color.when would be the best time to do this?and how do i care for them after the move? ty vt |
| Moving peonies can be difficult, and they often stop blooming for a few years after being moved or divided, so be certain that disturbing the well established plant is truly what you want to do. The time to transplant or divide peonies is in the fall. These are long lived plants so be sure to prepare a generous planting hole and allow enough space for each new plant to grow and mature. Plant so the eyes or growing points are about two inches below the soil surface. Water thoroughly after planting to settle any air pockets. Then use an organic mulch about three inches thick over the root area. Do not allow it to touch the stems. Water (if needed) to keep the soil slightly damp like a wrung out sponge until it freezes. Peonies can be mulched with organic mulch year round. It helps feed the soil slowly as it breaks down and it also helps keep down weeds. |
