Will azaleas grow in this region? We're at 7300 plus feet elevation? What is the care and maintenance, if so? |
Some deciduous azalea cultivars are hardy to about -7F, so if you choose the right ones, azalea's will grow for you. Azaleas require an acid soil (amend with peat moss), and use a special "acidified" azalea fertilizer, and they do best with plenty of soil moisture. Some cultivars tolerate sun, but most thrive in the shade. Check your local nursery - they will stock only those cultivars that do well in your area. There are few insect or disease problems associated with azaleas, so they're relatively easy to grow. Just some minor pruning to help keep their shape, and regular watering during the summer should make your new azaleas quite happy. |
