I heard that you should plant a clematis in the sun but the roots need to be in the shade. Is this true? What do you suggest about shading the roots? Thanks

It's true; clematis roots like cool, moist soil. You can accomplish this by either planting a small shrub on the sunny side of the clematis plant, or setting a decorative rock there. You might also use an organic mulch or low growing ground cover to achieve the same effect.

Best wishes with your clematis!
