If the area is shady, you could try some perennials such as Dicentra, Pulmonaria, and Lamium along with a few ferns or additional hostas with contrasting foliage. If the area is now sunny with the tree gone, keep in mind that the hosta might need to be moved to the shade. In a full sun area you could try perennials such as daylilies (Hemerocallis), purple coneflower (Echinacea purpurea), cranesbill (Geranium), tall border Phlox and Sedums. If you prefer annuals, try petunias for sun and impatiens for shade. I hope this gives you some ideas.
