I guess its tropical. I live in central florida and my gardenia is planted in full sun. Will this be too hot come full summer ?

Your gardenia will grow best if it receives morning sun and afternoon shade. Full sun in the summer will cause it to wilt and fail to bloom. Move it to a shadier spot and it should be happy outdoors all year around.
