Hindu Rope plant (Hoya carnosa `Krinkle Kurl') is an interesting and unusual form of Hoya. With dark green, glossy leaves that are contorted and cupped, it forms an almost a ropelike appearance. They are very slow growing and are one of the easiest plants to grow, which makes them well suited to the home environment.

Clusters of attractive, star shaped, pink-white blossoms are produced in late spring to early summer. Individual flowers are about the size of a dime and are mildly fragrant.

Hoya carnosa "Krinkle Kurl" does best in at least 4 hours of direct sunlight a day, but also can be grown in bright indirect or curtain-filtered sunlight. Night temperatures of 50 to 65? F and day temperatures of 70? F or higher are optimal. In the greenhouse we use a soil mix consisting of 1 part peat moss to 1 part loam to 1 part sand or perlite. Water freely during flowering but allow the soil to become almost dry between waterings. Fertilize every 2 months in spring and summer with a balanced fertilizer diluted to ? the strength recommended on the label. During the winter rest period plant should be watered sparingly only enough to keep the foliage from shriveling. Do not remove the leafless spurs or stubs, on which new flowers appear every year.

Propagation: Hoya carnosa "Krinkle Kurl" can be propagated anytime by air layering or by stem cuttings. A portion of the stem including one or more pairs of leaves will quickly produce roots in water or damp sand.
