I need to plant a 2' x 12 area. It is next to the house so I get Morning sun and afternoon shade. What type of plants would be good there? |
Here are a few suggestions for your partial sun garden: Heuchera (coral bells); A mound shaped perennial growing 1?3 feet tall and offering a wide array of attractive foliage from silver gray to red to chartreuse yellow. Excellent for foliage interest. Flowers in early summer with tall, open flower stalks. Prefers a partial shade site with good organic matter content and good drainage that is critical to the successful over-wintering of the plant. Removing flower stalks encourages rebloom. Zones 3-8. False Spirea (Astilbe x arendsii); An attractive clump forming perennial growing from one to four feet tall and offering dense, erect flower panicles ranging in color from white to red. Blooms mid summer. Prefers partial shade with the most critical requirement being adequate soil moisture. Useful in the shade border or around the edges of a water feature. Zones 4-9. Lady's Mantle (Alchemilla mollis); Suitable perennial used as a specimen or allowed to form a groundcover. Grows 8-10 inches tall and prefers a partial shade site. Will tolerate sun if soil is moist. Flowers in early summer with chartreuse flowers that are of minimal interest. Main interest is in the silky leaves that sparkle when rain or dew collects on them. Zones 4-7. Spiny Bear's Breeches (Acanthus spinosus); A dramatic perennial for a partial shade site with well-drained soil. Grows to 3?4 inches tall and has shiny, dark green, leathery leaves that look like thistle leaves. Blooms in early summer with purple/white flowers. Plants need good drainage for winter survivability. Zones 5-10. (consider this one an annual in your Ohio garden) Heartleaf Bergenia (Bergenia cordifolia); A perennial with shiny, leathery leaves growing 12-18 inches. Bergenia prefers partial sun in soils that retain some moisture. Blooms very early in the spring with pink flowers. May tend to be evergreen in areas with mild winters. Zones 3-8. Hope these plants appeal to you! |
