The Q&A Archives: Care of Lilacs

Question: Should pine needles be included as part of the organic material that we put in the soil around lilacs?

Answer: Lilacs prefer an alkaline soil and pine needles are acidic, so it would be best not to use the pine needles in the soil, or as a mulch for your lilacs. Pine needles can be added to the compost pile, or used as mulch material around acid-loving plants like blueberries or azaleas.
