The Q&A Archives: Weevils in Containers

Question: I noticed hundreds of baby weevil-like critters coming out of base of scabiosa planted in pot I don't want to use chemicals unless absolutely neccessary. Any natural ways to control?

Answer: It sounds like a population explosion of root weevils. You can destroy them by plunging the entire pot, plant and all, into a basin of water. The weevils will float to the surface so you can scoop them up and squish them or toss them into a container filled with water with a half inch of vegetable oil on the surface. The oil will smother the weevils. After you've chased the weevils out, repot the plant in fresh soil.
