Are hydrangea stems spotted? I have lines that are brown on the stems of the plant I just bought?

If that is not normal can I still plant it and will it live or just cause disease or death to the rest of my garden?

Thank you

Hydrangeas have lines around the stem at the leaf scars just beneath each bud, it makes a sort of v and goes around the stem. If what you are seeing is in a regular pattern, and the marks are not sunken or scaly or soft/rotting, then I think what you are seeing is normal. If in doubt, check back with your retailer and compare it to other hydrangeas of the same kind. Or, consult with your local county extension. They may appreciate a photo or sample enclosed in a clear plastic bag. I hope this helps you trouble shoot.
