Answer: Your concern is warranted. Tomatoes and potatoes are both members of the same family (nightshade), and they are both susceptible to soil-borne disease. For this reason, neither should be grown where the other was grown in the previous few years, and if they are grown side-by-side, you run the risk of the disease wiping out both crops.
