The Q&A Archives: Planting Potatoes Next to Tomatoes

Question: We're planning to put the potatoes in the morning shaded area of the garden with tomato plants on the other quarter of that end of the garden(they'll have full sun).Do you see any problems with this? (I've heard somewhere that potatoes and tomatoes should not be side by side.)

Answer: Your concern is warranted. Tomatoes and potatoes are both members of the same family (nightshade), and they are both susceptible to soil-borne disease. For this reason, neither should be grown where the other was grown in the previous few years, and if they are grown side-by-side, you run the risk of the disease wiping out both crops. Sometimes we have to take chances, but at least you are forewarned.
