There are a number of products that can be used to break down stumps. The chemical is put into holes drilled in the stump, after a substantial waiting period the stump is later burned. (The burning may or may not be allowed in your area, so that is something to verify before you opt for this method.) Another method is to bury the stump with soil and let nature do the work. Another approach is to grind the stump and largest roots at its base. You can hire a company to do this or rent a grinder to do it yourself. If the stump is not too large you may be able to cut it out yourself using a heavy iron pry bar and an axe or saw, however this is a very heavy duty job. Another approach is to encorporate the stump into your landscape by using it as a support for a table top, or to hold a container of flowers, or bird bath bowl or whatever is suited to your landscape. I hope this gives you some ideas.
