| I was just at the farmer's market and I bought a couple plants. I got an oregano, basil, juliet tomato, bell star tomato and 3 purple beauty bell pepper plants. I need advice on what size planters I should transplant them into, what kind of potting soil is recommended, plant foods, watering times, and where to keep the planters. (I know: more than one question.) I live in an apartment building on the first floor, I get partial sun on the patio in the morning, eastern exposure, but the fence is about 6 feet high. I've never grown plants on my own before and I'd love to be successful. Thank you for any help you can give me! |
| All of the plants you bought will do best in full sun all day long so place them in as much sun as possible. Use a good quality soil mix formulated for container planting. The basil can go in a small sized container such as a six inch pot, however the rest will need large pots. The pots should have drainage holes in the bottom to allow excess water to escape. One tomato plant does well in a five gallon size, for example. Use a slow release granular fertilizer or a water soluble fertilizer such as 10-10-10 plus minors. Follow the label directions for how much to use. Water so the soil stays evenly moist but is not sopping wet/saturated. Good luck with your veggies! |
