| Mulch is simply a 2-3" layer of organic material. Mulch helps slow evaporation, moderates soil temperatures and supresses weed. Organic mulch materials can be compost, aged-manure, shredded leaves, straw, peat - almost anything. I use compost and I simply spread it out over bare soil, right up the the bases of my plants.
