Our house is on a hill and we are looking for a perennial ground cover for the slope that goes down from our house. After the slope there is flat ground with several trees (this area is in partial shade). We would like to plant some kind of perennial in both of these areas. |
Groundcovers on a slope are an excellent idea. Some plants that like full sunshine include St. John's Wort (Hypericum), Vinca minor, Ajuga, Verbena, and Wintercreeper. For the shady area, Vinca, Ajuga, Wintercreeper, Cornus canadensis (Bunch Berry), Bergenia, and Lamium maculatum. Be sure to prepare the planting area by removing weeds and incorporating some organic matter to help hold soil moisture, and provide nutrients to the new plants. You can add organic mulch around the plants to keep weeds down until the plants spread to cover the area. |
