Azaleas usually have a pleasing natural shape and do not require routine or annual pruning with the exception of removing any dead or damaged branches as they occur. Selective pruning may be done to remove the occasional overly long branch. A light pruning or pinching of new growth tips can stimulate branching and cause the plant to develop into a more dense branching pattern. Deadheading or removing the spent flowers can be done if you wish, this may help increase bloom next year.
