The neighbor just put up a 4ft chain link fence between our property and we'd like to plant something the 50ft length of the fence (five nine foot sections between posts) that would provide a thick screen from his pool, dog, kids, preferably something evergreen. We saw American Arborvitae shrub at our local Home Depot and it looks like what we're looking for. We'd like to know how much it will grow in the first year if we plant now, how to best space it, etc. or if there is another variety of Arborvitae or other shrub that might be best for our needs.
THANKS!

Arborvitae is a popular plant for this type of use. Make sure that the cultivar is one that will mature to a size that fits your space. (The basic species is a fairly good sized tree.) Arborvitaes are relatively fast growers in comparison to other evergreens. Here is some additional information you may find helpful.
