I would like to know what suitable evergreen shrub or perennial that I could use in front of my front porch. It would be the focal point. My front porch gets the morning sun, however there is a large maple tree that gives shade after about three or four hours. I'm in zone five. Your answer is appreciated.

You might be able to grow one of the more cold tolerant, smaller maturing rhododendrons such as "PJM". This would give you foliage interest as well as spring flowers. However, I should mention that if the maple roots are encroaching on the planting area then you may have trouble with any new shrub due to the root competition. Good luck with your planting!
