Those bromelliads should be placed in a growing situation that best matches how you found them growing. In this case that appears to be in the soil. Your County Extension Office may be able to assist with an identification if you bring in a plant or send a digital photo. Most soil growing bromeliads prefer to have water in the tops of the open whorl of leaves and occasionally be fed a dilute solution of Miracle Gro or a similar product. See label instructions for the most dilute solution.
