| Coconut palm (Cocos nucifera) is not an easy plant to keep healthy indoors. In general, they require lots of direct sunlight and high humidity. Water thoroughly when the top inch or two of soil feels dry. But let it get drier in the winter, but never completely dry. Minimum winter temperature is 55 degrees. Fertilize with any standard fertilizer, but only when it is putting out healthy new growth. Check regularly for spider mites on the undersides of the leaves. This plant will grow 10-14' tall so it won't be a suitable houseplant for too long, and it won't survive normal winter weather in Los Angeles. It usually takes a tree 5-6 years to bear fruit and it can grow 12-20" in height each year. Of course, there are exceptions to all the rules. If you love the plant, buy it and take it home. Allow it several weeks to become accustomed to its new surroundings and then repot it in a size larger container. Wait until you see roots coming out of the drainage holes and repot it again, using fresh potting soil. Best wishes with your coconut palm! |
