I found a toad in the garden and did what I could to encourage him to stay (a shelter, access to water, even a small light to draw insects) Since a recent lawn fertilizing treatment by a company we have contracted, I have not seen him. Are such treatments harmful to toads?

There are certainly some concerns about the effects of fertilizer on amphibians. Whether or not the application was directly connected would be hard to say, especially since toads also have natural predators that might also be in your neighborhood.
