The Q&A Archives: pond grasses

Question: I want to plant something for the border area around a pond. Area is exposed to heavy wind full sun most of day some mid day shade. I want birds to be able to hide in the tall grass.Pls advise. Thanks CARYL

Answer: To some extent this depends on the size of your pond and whether it has an artifical or natural bottom. Some plants to consider would include cattails (Typha) if the soil is boggy, Carex if it is evenly moist, ornamental grasses such as Miscanthus, Panicum virgatum or Pennisetum alopecuroides if it is average. Your local naturalists should be able to advise you what would be the best choice based on the expected population of birds found in your local area.
