what is the best way to fix sod when you have a dog and the urine kills the sod in spots?

You can try to reduce the effect of the urine by quickly diluting it with water. You could also consult with your veterinarian to see if there are any dietary changes you might make to change the quality of the urine. Next you could consider allowing the dog a fenced area or run separate from the main lawn. To patch the bare spots you will need to loosen the soil down about six inches, work in some compost, then reseed. Keep the area moist until the seed germinates. Unfortunately there is really no easy answer to this.
