A friend told me he planted a Schefflera (houseplant) outside in direct sun and it flourish
beautifully. Could he be mistaken about the name of the plant.

It's true; Schefflera will tolerate temperatures of 35 to 105?F and from full sun to full shade exposure outdoors. It grows best indoors, though, where light and temperatures can be controlled.
