I am in process of closing escrow on a home with 5 acres. I want to know what would be the best trees to plant which would grow quickly and be desert/drought friendly for shade. In addition I am intrested in fruit trees that do well in this invironment and are not 'water hogs'. The soil is very sandy and I want to plant a small area of grass for children and pets tp play. Buffalo grass was suggested to me, however information online regarding buffalo grass seems it would not be suitable for our planting zones. What type of grass is recommend that would be water efficant and sturdy? Any other information available for gardening would be greatly appreciated. thank you. |
Here are two outstanding websites devoted to desert gardening and water conservation measures. The first is sponsored by Cochella Valley Water District: www.cvwd.org/archive/lush&eff/ The second is devoted to California native plants: www.laspitas.com Between the two sites you should come away with a better understanding of which plants grow best in the sites you have on your acreage and the best way to take care of them. Best wishes with your project! |
