The Q&A Archives: banana tree and avocado tree

Question: i want to know if these two trees are good to grow in my area and what soil they need, how much water, and sun do they need, also will they need anything special? also, what kind of soil to plant them?

Answer: Roxie,

I am sorry for this delayed reply to your gardening question. The spring rush has brought a deluge of questions and we are working hard to catch up!

You can grow banana plants but they won't likely produce bananas but will freeze in winter and return from the base of the plant in spring. Avocados are not so good for your area as the freeze will kill them to the ground or completely and even if they resprout the plant will not be able to produce for you and will be more of a multistemmed shrub than a tree.

Thanks for the question. Best wishes for a wonderful gardening season. Please stop in again soon!
