| I see I am late for planning a flower bed. I read the Project Guide: Making a flower bed. I see I should have started this sometime in the fall. I live in Kansas City and want to plant some flowers in my parents flower bed. Now that it is June and the soil has a lot of weeds and it is some hard soil. Do you have a suggestion. |
| You can still plant flowers. Purchase six-pac started plants or 4-6" pots of flowering plants suitable for the sun/shade exposure of the flower bed. Start by pulling or digging the weeds. Once you've gotten them all out, spread 3-4" of organic material over the top of the bed (compost, aged-manure, etc.) and then dig it in to a shovel's depth (6-8"). Level the soil and then plant away. If weeds are a constant problem you can install a weed barrier after you've leveled the bed and then cut holes in the weed barrier to plant your plants. Cover the weed barrier with mulch material (decorative rocks or bark). You'll be able to enjoy your labor of love for many years to come. Best wishes with your flower bed! |
