i have an october red maple tree that has these big offshoots at the base growing very tall. do i cut these or let them grow? some people tell me to cut them as they take nutrients away from the tree and others say let them grow. please advise. thank you, connie

Your tree should have just one trunk. Any extra shoots coming from the ground or from lower down on the trunk should be removed as soon as they appear.
