how can i stop them from eating plants

In my experience the best long term control is a wire mesh fence, but some gardeners have success using the spray-on or granular repellents labeled for rabbits. Be sure to apply and reapply per the label directions. Some gardeners also report that sprinkling blood meal in the garden will repel them; this must be repeated after rain.
