Answer: Cherries, like all trees, have extensive spreading root systems. You might try a smaller maturing variety of ornamental cherry such as "Snow Fountains" growing to about 12 feet tall and wide. The weeping mulberry is in the same size range, as would be the "Molten Lava" crabapple. The crabapple would probably be the longest lived of the three trees. Make sure it is planted far enough away that it will not block the sidewalk.
