I want to find a tree that wont grow very large (fence is about 10 feet high) to put in my small fenced-in backyard area. I have a dog so it has to be safe for pets. The area I want to put the tree gets sun most of the day time

The grassy area is small, only about 5feet x20 feet
and the soil contained lots of pebbles and some sand at one point which I was able to remove most of when I laid down sod. The sod has rooted and is doing well.

Dogwood is an attractive small tree, as is Hawthorn. Both provide spring flowers and both will be easy to keep small (with annual pruning).

Best wishes with your new tree!
