The Q&A Archives: Trees and Retaining Wall

Question: How far away should you plant a tree, shumard oak, from a retaining wall?

Answer: Quercus shumardii grows 40 to 60 feet tall and wide, so roots will spread as wide and even beyond. A general rule of thumb is to plant, at a minimum, half the distance of the mature plant.
