What will grow (be hardy) in South Lake Tahoe, CA with it's SNOW even in the Spring that is not poisonous to kids and pets? |
It can be difficult to grow in your region, but hardy dogwoods, golden chain trees, quaking aspen, Japanese maple, shasta daisies, daffodiles, tulips, snow in summer, sweet woodruff, and sedum will make a strong basic garden, which will be fairly easy to care for. For a full sun perennial garden: lupine, oriental poppies, peonies, black-eyed susan, delphinium, stock, ladies mantles, Jacobs ladder, and sweet williams do well. Popular annuals include: sunflowers, cosmos, geraniums, California poppies, snapdragons, petunias, vinca, periwinkle, Johnny jump-ups, lobelia and alysum. In part shade, plant columbine, pansies, and violets. Arbors in sunny areas can be decorated with hearty varieties of climbing roses, honeysuckle, whisteria, sweet peas, hops, and lilacs. Others to consider: Coreopsis (yellow), Ox Eye Daisy (white), Yarrow (white, pink, yellow or salmon), and Fever Few (white); Bushes: Bear Berry (creeping manzanita), Dogwoods, Potentilla (yellow, white or orange) Hope this list gives you some great ideas! |
