rock yard - Knowledgebase Question

my apartment bldg was built in a mountain,. they made an L shape in the mountain and my 'back yard is all rock, with a 20 foot rock 'wall' I've brought in some dirt and planted some flowers, put in ivy to climb up the 'wall' and have bird feeders and potted plants. What, other than astro-turf, can i use on the ground, which is solid rock?

This is such an interesting question. Depending on the conditions, you might be able to grow moss there, or you might be able to spread some gravel topped with compost, and grow alpine scree type plants such as Aquilegia. Or, you could consider a Japanese garden effect created with raked gravel and a few large impressive stones and possibly a water feature such as a fountain. Or, perhaps you could consider the rock to be the equivalent of a paved patio, adding seating, a fire pit, and large containers of plants accordingly. I hope this gives you some ideas.
