I have some hostas that receive a little sun and they are doing well. The hostas that are in almost total shade become white on the edges of the leaves. Can you tell me what is happening?

As long as the plant seem healthy otherwise, based on your description I think you may have one of the hostas that normally has a white edge. Hosta sieboldii and its many cultivars tend to show white or cream along the edge of each leaf. There are many, many different kinds of hosta and using variegated forms can help bring interest to a deeply shaded area.
