The best way to get a good green color is to fertilize correctly and maintain the proper soil pH. Additional steps can include top dressing with compost and core aerating to improve air and water infiltration as well as frequent mowing at the correct height. The first step would be to run some basic soil tests and check fertility and soil pH. Then fertilize and spread lime as indicated by the test results. Your local county extension should be able to help you with the testing and interpreting the results, and with developing a lawn care plan.
