| Poison ivy is a persistent plant so it will be a prolonged project. You can try digging it out by hand, taking the roots. Or, you can spray the area with a nonselective herbicide containing glyphosate. This is translocated through the plant from the foliage to the roots. Read and follow the label directions. It will probably take more than one spraying to kill it entirely. Subsequent treatments to treat regrowth may be required, sometimes this can be done by a wipe on method to foliage that appears, or by cutting stems and painting the cut ends with the herbicide rather than spraying the overall area again. If you start now you may be ready to plant the lawn by fall. The best time to spray it is in late summer to early fall when the plant is building its root reserves for winter.
