I have a couple of beds with ivy for ground cover. Now some grass and weeds are starting to invade the area. What is the best way to control without killing the ivy and resorting to picking it all out by hand.

Surflan is a pre-emergent herbicide that will keep weeds from popping up in your ivy, but it won't kill the weeds that are there now. The best course of action is to hand pull the weeds. Once the area is free of weeds, apply Surflan and it should keep future weeds from sprouting.
