Regular potting soil will be just fine for your pygmy date palms. The bags typically will tell you how many one-gallon containers it will fill.

Here's a table to help you figure out the size of your pots and the amount of potting soil each needs:

Pot Diameter in INCHES.....Soil needed in QUARTS
8".........3 QT
10".......5 QT
12".....12 QT
14".....18 QT
16".....22 QT
20".....28 QT
24".....36 QT
30".....72 QT
36".....96 QT

You'll probably be using at least a 5-gallon container for each plant, which is about 12" so you'll need about 12 quarts per container.
