I have just moved to a new home and there are no plants or trees in my rectangled shaped backyard. I don't know were or how to begin to start a landscaped yard that will have to be planted in phases.

I think the best course of action is to go to your local library for books on landscape design. Once you have an idea of how you'd like your yard to look, you can visit Home Depot's website for plant suggestions (depending upon whether you're planting in sun or shade). Then visit with the staff in the garden center and they'll be able to help you find soil amendments, building materials and plants.

Best wishes with your new landscape!
