The Q&A Archives: What to do with holes in lawn

Question: Hello, how can I prevent sqirrels to dig holes in my lawn? They do it early in the morning and by the time I get up the damage is done.

Answer: Based on your description, I would tend to suspect a skunk has been digging in the lawn during the night or during its early morning wandering rather than squirrels. In either case, there isn't too much you can do to stop it, unfortunately. You might check and see if your lawn has an excessive grub problem as this would attract skunks. If so, beneficial nematodes can be applied to reduce the grub population. Be sure to read and carefully follow all of the label directions for best results.
