Camellias are often used as foundation plantings, without problem. Be sure to plant it far enough away from the house so that you can walk behind it when it's mature. Otherwise you'll have problems when you try to paint your house! The camellia needs good air circulation all around it, anyway, to help keep it healthy, so coming out from the house 6-8 feet should provide good air circulation plus give you room to walk behind it.
