If this is a brand-new bed, rototill the area, spread 4-6 inches of organic matter (compost, leaf mold, peat moss or aged manure)over the top and rototil that in, then mark furrows in the site and plant your tomatoes 2-3 feet apart. Mulch the area heavily to help retain moisture and keep weeds down. Be sure to make watering basins around the base of the plants so you can supply water during the growing season. Tomato plants will need about one-inch of water per week.
