The Q&A Archives: rose

Question: my 10 year old large YELLOW rose bush turned colored to red roses how and why did this happen?

Answer: Based on your description, your rose was probably grafted and now the rootstock has overwhelmed the yellow rose. If winter kills off the desired rose, or if something damages the graft, then the rootstock will begin to sprout canes. These will be vigorous and will outcompete the grafted top. Carefully prune out the canes with red flowers. If you look carefully at the plant, you may see that some canes look different from the canes with red blooms; these will be the yellow rose. Hopefully there will be some of the yellow rose canes left.
