I want to know the proper way to care for this shrub after it flowers. Should I trim or prune this shrub to encourage growth and where do I cut if off when trimming?

For flower production, puakenikeni should be pruned hard to stimulate new growth for flowering and to keep the tree (shrub) low enough for easy harvest. You can safely remove up to one-third of the live growth when pruning, so prune to a pleasing shape and expect one or two new stems to emerge just below your pruning cuts.

Enjoy your lovely plant!
