If they are simply munched, with random holes, suspect caterpillars of some sort. The loss of leaves should not affect the fruit. Japanese beetles are difficult to control, organically or otherwise; caterpillars can be controlled with the botanical Bt (bacillus thuringensis), sold as Dipel.
