Erica,

I am sorry for this delayed reply to your gardening question. The spring rush has brought a deluge of questions and we are working hard to catch up!

Build a berm of soil about 4 feet in diameter and 4-6 inches high around the base of the plant. Fill it with water once or twice a week and allow it to soak in completely. this will help it get through this first critical summer. By next year regular watering of a larger area should suffice. Fertilize in spring with a lawn type fertilizer at a rate of one to 2 cups per 50 square feet and water it in well with an inch of sprinkler irrigation. Repeat in early summer.

Thanks for the question. Best wishes for a wonderful gardening season. Please stop in again soon!
