When you do have volunteer plants will they grow a good crop like the original plants or do you need to weed them out to keep them from drawing energy needed for the original plants?

That's an excellent question! There are both male and female plants; the males produce the edible stalks so you'll want only male plants in your garden. If you have both male and female and you allow the females to set seeds, they can produce new plants but there's no guarantee the plants will be productive males. On the other hand, if the volunteers in your garden are growing in close proximity to the original plants, they could simply be an extension of the original plant and will therefore grow into bearing plants and you can leave them where they are. Hope this clarifies things for you.
