Lila,

I am sorry for this delayed reply to your gardening question. The spring rush has brought a deluge of questions and we are working hard to catch up!

Sooty mold forms when small insects like aphids, whiteflies, or scale secrete honey dew a sugary water on which the mold then can grow. If you can determine which insect is present we can prescribe an appropriate remedy for them. Your County Extension Office can assist with a diagnosis and also recommendations for control.

Thanks for the question. Best wishes for a wonderful gardening season. Please stop in again soon!
